ding dong

15 April 2007

something i hadn’t heard in ages is the ringing of a doorbell. for a short time in Hemet, at my parents place, my children spent much time listening to the chimes bing bang bing BONG bong bong bing bang…it was all very new and interesting. Here, the sounds we are most likely to hear, in no particular order are :

our dog, Tiger, barkeling his head off.

the inscesant honkeling of a well used car horn.

the clank clank clankeling of someone rapping the big mungus lock swinging from heavy duty chain against our chicken & barb wire front gate. (too wordy?) …someone smacking the lock against the gate…

these are the sounds of arrival in our environ.

Noone knocks, if they have entered the gate or compound area, they are basically in your house, so knocking does not apply here.

My favorite arrival sound? Gerrys car. it brings him, yes, but it brings with him the arrival of comfort and safety, love, security and fun and yes, very rarely, annoyance but by far, the rounded rumbling sound of his little car, is my favorite arrival sound of all.gerrys car

  1. Do you feel safe there? How many homes in your compound/area?

  2. Hey Les! well, ‘compound’ is another word for yard. I think because of the chainlink and barb wire you get the feeling you are in more of a compound than a yard. Anyway, this is what the locals call it..a compound. In our area, which is called Beverly Hills….(not even close to the CA on!)there are appox 40-50 houses. It’s more of an upscale ‘local’ area. Don’t get me wrong, it is not upscale by N.american standards but by local ones, it’s a good area. Our neighbours across and beside us each have 3 dogs. and those dogs keep having dogs and so on ans so on. the howling is horrendous at times and then there are the roosters that like to go off at odd times throught the day and night. then there are the hindi karaoke nights and then to offset that, the fijian meke, singing and drumming. When it is quiet, it is almost spooky. To answer your first question, do i feel safe here? it depends on what is happening in the area. it goes in waves of b&e’s and robberys, and when Gerry is not home, i don’t sleep a wink. For the most part, i feel ok. i am aware that i don’t come from here and maybe i try to be extra careful and courteous and in that, unable to relax as much as another would. but, we do really like this area, children around, we are familiar with the groups of people around and their noises…it’s hard to feel safe when you are surrounded by burglar bars. black shiney burlar bars on every window and door. that’s just how it is here, better to be safe than sorry. i guess we ARE safe!
